The teachers at La Scuola dedicate a great deal of time making observations of the children to help identify and guide learning based on their interests. Through in-depth observation, we have noticed a frequent interest and awareness that the children hold of their natural surroundings.

Realizing the importance that we place on the early childhood developmental stage as one in which children develop habits and character, alongside the children’s obvious and innate desire to learn and explore the natural systems around them, it became obvious that we needed to incorporate education for sustainability at La Scuola. Ms. Jessie, our Environmental Director, has been able to support both the children and teachers to establish an environment which supports and promotes education for sustainability for the children and families of La Scuola.

Education for sustainability is an idea that incorporates interdisciplinary learning, inquiry and action with the goal of achieving a healthy future for children, their communities, and the planet. By supporting the children’s innate desire to learn about the natural world around them, we are supporting both their curiosity while incorporating twenty first century learning which can be applied throughout their future as they become responsible citizens of the earth.

At La Scuola, we aim to provide an environment which engages and encourages children to explore and enjoy the world of nature under the guidance and with the companionship of caring adults.
